last vacation for 2007

When was the last time you laid your head on the sand? I hope not too long though - it's one activity we shouldn't deprive ourselves of. For a couple grand, we can afford to wallow on the sands of Laiya Aplaya, in San Juan, Batangas. One of the new favorite hideaways now is the Kabayan Resort. It's one of the newest and most affordable escapes from the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila. Crystal clear, emerald waters, an "almost white" sandy beach, and the majestic view of Mount Lobo awaits you at this premier vacation spot.

Kabayan offers a variety of accommodations - whether you are bringing your special someone or taking the whole family. For starters, there are daytime cottages where you can just relax and enjoy the view. A grill is available and you can use the common shower areas. Condo-style rooms are also available for two to three guests per room. Single or twin-sharing beds are standard for these particular rooms and you're provided with your own bathroom. But if you're bringing the whole baranggay, there are separate cabanas for rent. Each one has single or twin double sharing beds and individual bathrooms with hot showers. There is also a mini kitchen in each cabana - a stove and standard kitchen utensils are also included. A five-gallon purified water complete with hot and cold water dispenser also comes standard. Parking is never a problem within the Kabayan Resort grounds. There is also a 24-hour security watch all over the resort so security is not an issue either.

The resort has facilities not found in the other resorts within the area of Laiya. It has two swimming pools, one for the kids and a bigger, deeper pool for the adults who don't fancy dipping in the salt water. There is also a cafeteria and a snack bar. A small chapel that hosts anticipated Sunday masses are also within grounds. Couples who want a beach wedding can have the best of both worlds here, as the chapel is just a stone's throw away from the beach. An aviary houses a dozen or so native birds endemic to San Juan as well as imported macaws. For the really athletic, there is a basketball court and a billiards hall. After all the hectic activities you can do around the resort, you can relax and enjoy a full body massage right on the beach itself. The resort can also arrange an island hopping tour around Sigayan Bay, where you can explore the different snorkeling spots. Just don't expect the loud music and all-night partying in Laiya, such as those found in more popular tourist destinations as Boracay or Puerto Galera. Peace and tranquility are the name of the game here. Drinking is allowed, but only in your own rooms or cabanas.

Getting to Kabayan Resort is easy. If you are bringing your own car, you can take two routes. The first is the "old" route, via the South Luzon Expressway, exit at Canlubang and head towards Sto. Tomas all the way to Candelaria, Quezon. Then you make a right at the Sambat Junction to San Juan. Or you can take the Star Tollway after Canlubang, exit at Lipa City then proceed to Padre Garcia towards Rosario, Batangas. San Juan town proper will be next and then take the road beside the San Juan Municipal Hall towards Laiya. If you'll ask me, it's a lot more fun to take the Star Tollway and Lipa route - you can avoid much more traffic and the big buses headed for Bicol or Lucena.

Rates are affordable but they are constantly changing due to the volume or guests according to the season. Generally, as with any other resort in the Philippines, Kabayan's summer rates are higher, especially on the weekend. The resort has a website (http://www.kabayanresort.com.ph) where you can check their rates and post your reservations. It's time to stop staring at your computer and start treating yourself to a well-deserved vacation.

birds

Now I know how David Attenborough felt, waiting and watching all those wildlife when I tried photographing these swifts. Too bad the kit Nikkor 18-135mm G lens wasn't quite fast enough to capture the magnificent birds. Good try though, in my opinion.

picture with santa

Santa visits Gateway Mall and of course, we're there to seize the moment. We got there early, so that we'll be the first people in line to have our pics taken with Santa. Too bad Sofie wasn't as keen to see Santa Claus as much as Matt and Jaden!

gift giving

The VBP Family celebrated their late patriarch's birthday by sharing a little bit of their blessings with the unfortunate children of Baranggay Socorro. Through the cooperation of Brgy. Socorro officials, the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of Murphy - a total of 200 children received their early Christmas gifts. They each got a loot bag filled with candies and toys, as well as a balloon which brightened their day.

Brgy. Kagawad Jeric Evangelista, Rotary President Steve Melendres, PP Lito Manson, and other members of the Rotary Club of Cubao spearheaded the event. The Rotaractors of Murphy likewise shared their part in the registration of the participants as well as crowd control.

winter glamour

Hi! Click on the thumbnail to view the gallery of "Winter Glamour 2007". The White Room of MyPlace was a great venue in terms of the lighting and the artsy-fartsy design. Bouncing off-cam wasn't a real issue - plenty of very white and very flat surfaces to deflect on.

Despite of the other technical difficulties, the event was a very memorable and enjoyable occasion. I hope you have fun browsing the gallery.

twinks' birthday

Rotaract District Secretary Francoise Marie "Twinkle" Alonzo celebrated her --th (guess her age) birthday last December 20 alongside RAC Paraiso's President Lenna Rosa Desuasido. As usual, her Kamuning abode were full of beauties from the Rotaract Club of Timog who also held their annual election of officers. Unfortunately, DRR Boyet, ADRR Robert, Mark, and I weren't present to take photos of the election as we were busy running for beers! Professional Development Director Abby Carreon emerged as the President-Elect of RAC Timog for Rotary Year 2008-2009. Congratulations Abby!

For the photos, it was a hit-and-miss affair once again. The interior shots were easy, with a low, bright ceiling to bounce from. But outside (were most of the action was), I had to choose between two ceilings - a high and a higher one, with half a meter gap between them. The gap had a major distance issue, 93 billion miles to the nearest galaxy so bouncing off the gap was out of the question. The walls weren't much help either, as they were solid concrete with hardly any paint. So no off-camera bounce for outside shots, just plain old flash in the face, at 1/32nd power. Sorry guys!

soul patrol in manila

American Idol winner Taylor "Soul Patrol" Hicks graced the Philippine shores for a series of free concerts courtesy of the Ayala Malls. I happened to catch the second installment at the Greenbelt 3 open area and saw an American Idol in the flesh.

The concert started late by half an hour. I arrived two and a half hours before the event, hoping to get a good vantage point for the "free" concert. But the event wasn't free at all, you had to secure a ticket and to get one, you have to know someone (that is, from the organizers or any of the major sponsors). Shame that the guards are on their usual bulldog mentality, gnarling and barking at anyone near the concert grounds.

Anyhow, I managed to secure on the right flank of the stage, about 15 meters from Taylor. My 18-135mm Nikkor lens struggled to focus on the salt and pepper haired Bammer. The white fabric covering the scaffolding didn't help at all with my strobes so the resulting white-outs. Hope you enjoy viewing the pics though.

photo edits!

Built with GIMP 2 editing software. Quite dodgey with the controls but still worth experimenting. And yes, the software is free! Subject is Des.

haydz' wedding

First foray into the world of serious wedding photography. Bounced flash over a very bright ceiling with plenty of ambient light inside the Hearts of Jesus and Mary Parish. Reception area wasn't too bad in terms of lighting either. Very low, white ceiling with a little decor so bouncing off wasn't a bad idea at all. Had to stop taking photos when called as emcee! It was a lot of fun though. Congratulations Haydz and Orly!
