midcon 2008

The Toastmasters of District 75 gathered at the City of Smiles Bacolod, Negros Occidental, Philippines, for the Midyear Conference. The Sugarland Hotel hosted the two-day festivities including the Triathlon Speech Contest and the Evaluation Speech Contest.

Bacolod is just an hour's plane ride from Manila. Getting to the airport usually takes longer than the flight itself. Our plane arrived 10 minutes ahead of schedule though, but when we got to the venue, the Conference was well on its way.

The Triathlon went first, starting with the Impromptu speech contest. The question given the nine contestant was "Know where you stand, you'll know where to go". All nine brave participants gave their best in answering the seemingly simple question. The prepared speech immediately followed the impromptu speech and the singing contest was left for the Masskara night. Drinking and dancing immediately followed the contest.

The Evaluation speech contest was held on the second day. The grand winner of them all was Meliton Sillador, after capturing the Triathlon and the Evaluation Championship trophies.

Some Toastmasters took the earliest flight out of Bacolod on the second day of the event while others stayed to tour the city. We went to the Mambukal Falls, right on the foothills of Mt. San Carlos. The place was great, with lots of attractions like a butterfly farm, a boiling sulphur pool, a hot dipping pool, and seven spectacular waterfalls.
